A Valve writer, I think it was Jay Pinkerton, once stated on Twitter that there are technically only nine characters. While still vague, and taking all the times there are multiple of the same mercs on the same team notably with the Soldier invasion of Meet the Medic, that leaves cloning as the most plausible explanation. And yes, cloning someone likely also clones tumors, if they had them. And also, the war between Demo and Soldier extended between all versions of them on both teams, each of them hypes up their army of clones in promotional materials. That said, clones might get killed off during holidays or other off-hours such as Halloween, so that when Miss Pauling spends time with the mercs, she's technically interacting with both teams. Just my theory though, I assume Valve will never tell us the truth One sidenote: I think Helltower most likely took place on the same evening the Mann brothers died, as I can't imagine Helen would have allowed two ghosts to take away control over the mercs while already under attack by the robot hordes.
